The word derma (originated from French and Latin languages) is used for skin scientifically. And therefore the study of the skin falls under the science named ‘Dermatology’. Broadly speaking it undertakes the study of skin’s basic nature, its diseases and some cosmetic problems along with the medical and surgical aspects. It also deals with the cosmetic problems of scalp, hair and nails. A person learned in the stream is a Dermatology Doctor.
Scientifically ‘skin’ is the soft outer covering of any animal species. The Skin (along with other organs of the integumentary system) is mainly meant for the protection of the internal organs, muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs. Biologically, skin is an organ. In fact it is the largest organ of the integumentary system which is in turn made of multiple layers of ectodermal tissue. It has both defensive and protective mechanism. However they are also looked upon since the very primitive times as a vital prospect of an individual’s beauty and appearance. A good skin is also considered to be a symbol of good health. Hence various means have been adopted form time to time to beautify and keep the skin healthy. The following are its crucial and vital functions:-
- It plays a key role in protecting (the body) against pathogens
- Prevents excessive water loss from the surface.
- Insulation, temperature regulation (through sweating and scaling etc)
- Sensation: as it is one of the 5 sense organs that facilitate the sense of touch, warmth, cold etc. It is highly vascular and supplied with sensor nerves from the nervous system in the inner portions.
- It also plays an important role in the protection of vitamin B folates.
- It also has self repair and recovery mechanism through which it heals itself. A severely damaged skin heals by forming scar tissue which is often discolored and de-pigmented.
Since it is also a vital criterion in judging the beauty of an individual, grooming and maintenance of the skin is a major issue with people. From the primitive times Cosmetics have been used for the beautification of the skin (including both the skin on the general body surface and the facial skin). They include skin-care creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail and toe nail polish, eye and facial makeup, permanent waves, colored contact lenses, hair colors, hair sprays and gels, deodorants, hand sanitizer, baby products, bath oils, bubble baths, bath salts, butters and many other types of products.
Owing to the advancement in the science and technology Dermatological and Cosmetic Sciences have undergone major developments and now they can impart beauty to any individual in many ways including the Cosmetic and dermatological Surgery, Plastic Surgery and other processes like Cosmetic Breast, Eyelid, Facial, Nose, Laser Surgery etc. They are an easy alternative for the people deprived of the desired looks, beauty etc. Though criticized for hiding the originality of any individual they are well developed sciences getting popular day by day.
